I have trained extensively in the Lester Horton technique in my undergraduate training at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and later at the Ailey School in a specialist pedagogy workshop.
The Lester Horton technique is a dance technique created by Lester Horton. Created with influences of modern, jazz, ballet, and African dance, the Lester Horton technique prepares dancers for performance in many dance genres while providing them with an appreciation for diverse performance aesthetics. Dancers who train in this technique benefit from improvement to their alignment, core strength, musicality, and general performance technique.
I offer workshops specialising in the Lester Horton technique and the history of its use in the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. A typical workshop lasts two hours and includes a dance technique class, a brief background on Lester Horton and his influence on Alvin Ailey, and a Question and Answer session. More extensive workshops include a full lecture on the history and development of the technique and its use in Alvin Ailey's choreography, such as Revelations.
I deliver these workshops in FE colleges, Sixth Forms, Universities, and for institutions such as The Royal Academy of Dance in London. To book a workshop or schedule a longer residency, please contact me at:
